Cylinde liner replacement

Post by davomoto » Wed Jan 30, 2008 6:52 pm

I picked up a set of standard bore liners. I have read that you can heat the cylinders in an oven, and the liners will come right out. How hot do you need to heat the cylinder to? Thanks in advance!

sorry I don't mean to hijack your discussion, however related to your question, when I last had my CB77 engine out and cylinder off, one of the liners slipped out, I was horrified. I stuck it back in with very little force and reassembled my engine. Haven't had any problems, but haven't seen many miles on it either. Suppose it should be taken back apart and have a new liner fit?

I replaced my CA77 liners recently with a used but better set before boring to S2. I heated the alum. cylinder with a propane torch just a little on the three sides accesable at each liner. I had it supported top side down high enough off the floor for the liner length to clear. After just a little WARMING one slid out on its own and the other with nudging by a wood block. After cleaning all the stogage grease off the new liners I sprayed a coat of clear urethane on the OD (per LM's suggestion). Flipped the cylinder over leaving clearance for the liner skirt. Again warmed three sides of the cylinder and the new liner slid right in. Ditto other side. Once it starts don't stop as it cools fast. If you use an oven the liner is also warming with the alum. cylinder, albiet not at the same rate. Also stinks up mom's kitchen!

200 degrees "out and in" and when "in" I freeze the cylinders for a couple of hours. ..........lm

Dick, I found them on evil bay. I heated the cylinder to 200 degrees, as LM suggested, and the liners cam out with a light tap. They appear to have a coating of something on them. Do you suggest coating them before reinstalling new liners? What do you coat them with ?
