Clicking noise from Stator area

Post by rgtaylor2 » Wed Jul 25, 2007 11:44 am

Got my Dream up and running with the great help from Loud Mouse and joewier1, these guys are a great asset to this forum.

I am working on one more issue I can't quite figure out, I started the motor with the stator cover off when I was setting the timing and I am getting clicking that seems to be coming from the stator. I am sure some noise is OK but this seems pretty loud. I have not removed the stator or coils to inspect behind them, but about the only thing I see behind them is the starter chain.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what did it take to solve it.

Could be something to do with the starter clutch rollers if their springs are broken.Could the stator be rubbing on the rotor somehow?Best bet is probably to take it apart and turn by hand, hard to say really. You may want to take the whole right side cover off and start it and check it out that way.Good luck.

Good call Joe, when I got the cover off and moved the rotor I could see more movement than was ever meant to be in the starter clutch. The caps were completely gone and the rollers were making the chatter. I have another engine that I have been cannibalizing for parts so all I did was replace the entire rotor and it sounds great now. I have posted a picture of the plate to show the wear I found, notice the rounded out areas. Lucky no real damage was done.
