You may want to take the oil pump apart for inspection. You will need an impact driver to get it apart. Even then, they can be tough. Grind just a little bit of the end off of a #3 Phillips bit and it should work. All the surfaces where the gears run inside of it should be smooth. If there are lots of grooves, that may explain why it was taken out. It is not really a pressure pump, but any grooves will reduce the minimal flow that it was originally capable of. The screws were tight when you took it apart. They need to be tight when reassembled. The paper gasket may seem awfully thin, but it is necessary.

If your pump is good, you still need to know if you can get the motor freed up before you put the pump back in. You can try removing both plugs and put in a 50/50% ATF and Acetone mix. Let it sit for a couple of days. Put a pan under the oil pump hole to catch any of the mixture that might come out. If it leaks out that could be a good sign. Get the bike off of the stand and put it in 4th gear. Gently rock it back and forth to see if you can break the engine loose. There will probably be some ATF/Acetone mix still in the cylinder and it will shoot out of the spark plug holes and all over everything if the engine breaks loose. Put a rag over each side of the head to keep it from going everywhere and a piece of cardboard under the bike is a good idea, too. If your motor doesn't break loose easily, that could be a bad sign. If it is rusted in tight, a rebuild will almost certainly be required. But, if there is any way to break it loose and get the bike running (even poorly) so you can ride it and assess what you have, it will help you know what you are dealing with for the rebuild. Also, there is nothing that will give you enthusiasm for the rebuild like the enjoyment of riding your bike, even for a short ways.

I plan on breaking the engine down anyway due to the fact that the kick starter wont grab and i am have the same problem i believe another user is having. i am taking coves and what not off to get to the crank bolt to try and turn motor. i think the kick starter shaft fell and maybe jammed in transmission cause tire and trans engage but kick starter just free spins like a slipping ratchet. and no way to start the bike cause when i pulled the tank and seat off the harness is in much disrepair so i am gonna string a new one. there is just too much that needs to be fixed to attempt a start. the cables are all damaged and pulled apart. structurally the bike is sound and hopefully the engine is not to bad. my biggest question at the moment is powder-coat or paint when i get the frame and tins apart and clean.

Hey MRiesAP,

My wife and I have CA77E-105667, an "early" '64. And I'll be finishing my A&P program in December--overhauling magnetos today. Anyway, we were lucky enough to find a running bike, but there are some clutch issues and a misbehaving kickstarter that occasionally moves by itself when downshifting into first. So I'll be splitting the cases soon.

Have you put any more time into your project since your last post in this thread?

Good morning, I have a thread under restoration projects so I can log my progress. I have not got as far as I would like, but that happens. once holidays have passed will be able to move forward at a more brisk pace.

I have the kickstarter move on mine occasionally as well. I think it may be due to downshifting at too high a speed with the engine RPM too low. Then again that could be wishful thinking.
