Cleaning or painting motor without complete rebuild

I have heard different opinions about painting the engine itself. The side covers can be painted, and the round covers high-polished or chromed. But the engine needs the open pores of the aluminum to cool correctly, and paint, even high-temp over time can flake off and look worse. That is what some experts have told me......but, I could be wrong
