A sleeping/warn clutch is just that all the time just more noticeable under some conditions.
Is the bike owner sure his clutch is adjusted correctly?. .............lm
When the clutch pack is worn it will tend to slip slightly under all conditions that's true, but a marginal clutch or one that isn't too worn will slip first at high load in top gear and not in lower gears.
With a clutch with slightly soft springs for example, it will only slip when torque applied exceeds the ability of the clutch to transmit that toque. With a light load those conditions are not exceeded, so it does not slip. It doesn't take long though for it to start to slip all the time. I'd also suggest the owner should check for air leaks in the intake, blockages in exhaust or air filters and try a new main jet. The main may be aftermarket and not the flow rate it should be. My dream would slip mostly when shifting up into 3rd or when suddenly opening it up in 3rd or 4th.
I could feel it break loose and hear the rpms race faster than they should for the speed. I could make it slip in any gear by opening the throttle too quickly under constant load. But with light throttle and matching gear to the load it wouldn't slip in any gear, or at least I couldn't hear or feel it. It doesn't slip at all now thanks to LM disc pack. 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
