Been a LONG time!

Post by houseowax » Mon Aug 01, 2011 10:34 am

But here I am, ready to start back up.

The backstory is pretty long, but it's all documented in this thread. I got the cyls honed by a pro and they look as they shouls, with a light crosshatch pattern. My pistons read 0.50 on top (2 over, I assumed) and I ordered the appropriate rings for 2 over- part no 13030-266-000. I got the oil ring on with no difficulty, but the remaining rings won't lie in the grooves- they appear to be too thick.
The grooves are completely clean; the pistons are like new. The rings are NOS and seem to be the same diameter as the ones I removed, but the thickness is obviously different. Unfortunately I don't have anything precise enough to record an exact dimension and it's not visible to the naked eye.

This bike is a '63 if that's at all relevant. Although, come to think of it, the pistons are oversized so they're not original to the bike anyhow. The only thing I can think of is that the rigs I ordered aren't the proper ones; maybe the box was mis-marked? Anybody have any other ideas?

Ya need the 275 rather than the 266 as the 266 are the early thicker rings which were replaced with the thinner 275 rings. .......lm

What a day!
I'm just about finished... I hope. I tried to fish the dropped cam chain out of the crankcase with a coat hanger and a mag light. It was all folded up under the sprocket and made it pretty clear to me that it wasn't going to cooperate. I tried taking the cam chain roller off but that didn't make a lick of difference; that chain wasn't coming. Despite my fears it was time to face the facts- the crankcase was going to need splitting.
without getting too complicated here's my situation- our house is being renovated so we moved into a rental apt. The Dream moved over to a friends house. My Bill Silver CD and Honda repair manual moved... somewhere. I'll turn them up eventually. For now all I have is a Clymer manual which came with the 1965 CB77 i bought yesterday (more on that later). While the Clymer is certainly helpful it's a bit vague and the pics are so sludgy as to be nearly worthless. But I soldiered on slowly and methodically and got the case split with the aid of a blowtorch, a deadblow mallet and a wedge of rock maple. When I broke out the rear axle from my parts bike and effortlessly pulled the rotor I was grinning like a sweepstakes winner.
So I cleaned and photographed everything I could, uncoiled he $@!# cam chain, and prepared to put everything back together. Then I realized I was missing a bit of info and/or parts.

I need new circlips for the piston wrist pins, right? It seems that they always recommend replacing them.
Is there no gasket/packing for the right side (kickstart) cover? I think no, but I wanna be absolutely sure.
Hondabond- use it between the crankcase covers and... um... side covers? I know you're not meant to use it in the top end at all, right? Also, Hondabond blue, not red- right?

Forgive me, but without my Silver guides etc I'm a bit handicapped and for the last couple of days I've been having terrible results with the search feature here ( is it just me?). If any one out here has read this far and could lend a hand I'd be much obliged.

It's wise to replace the circlips, and cheap insurance against a walking pin. Make sure the gap in the circlip is not over or near the slot in the groove, best to place it at top or bottom.

No gasket or sealant on right side cover.

Honadbond on the crankcases, not the left side cover- it has a gasket. No place on the top requires it. I used Hondabond 4 which is white. I couldn't speak as to the use of the blue or red.

All good advice so far! And - This is information you needed 24 hours ago, but you could have gotten the cam chain sorted out by removing the oil pump... Anyway, now that you're into it, it sounds like you're on the right track - Excellent time to replace any or all of the oil seals on the right side (good kit available from Disaster Motors). When you reassemble the cases, paint a thin layer of Hondabond on all of the mating surfaces, even the ones behind the center crank bearings and be sure to go around all of the studs. There's also a sealing washer on one of the 6mm studs that should be replaced. The only caution with the Hondabond is not to get any in the oil passages up front. You don't need any on the seals.
