Spark advance springs
Ok, I've read what I can find to read on this subject. Both of mine have the rubber stoppers intact ... now that I know where to look for them at. The springs, when at "rest", do not pull the rubber stoppers against the inside of the curcle that they are contained within. with this being said, I will order new springs BUT when I install, should the springs (when at rest) pull the pawls so that the rubber stoppers touch the inside of the 'circle'?
Yes, but they probably won't. A little free play in there won't hurt anything. They will tighten up at idle. Statically, you will have a little play in the points cam however which can make setting the ignition timing a little tricky. You have to make sure the cam has a little counter-clockwise drag on it to take up the slack in the springs. The points and wiper usually do this without you thinking about it but just be aware. Once running, a check with a strobe timing light is always a good idea.
