Engine clatter

Post by mikescottt » Wed May 18, 2005 10:49 pm

My 64 dream I just bought has a clatter when reving the motor. I have read the manual and I think it is the cam sprocket with loose rivits. Has anyone done the tack weld fix and can it be done without pulling the cam and sprocket from the engine?

Mike imho It would be alot of things before it would be the rivits holding the cam sprocket to the cam. Have you tried the cam chain tensioner? I think if I was to guess that would be my first. I'm an auto mechanic and I understand motorcycle engines are different but the basics are the same. Having said that I wouldn't weld anything still"in the engine". You could be dealing with (unburnt fuel) fumes in the crankcase that are explosive. Good Luck and let us all know what you find,Steve Greer
