cb77 gaskets

Post by bk305 » Tue Feb 12, 2008 6:42 pm

does anybody use a sealant on the top end gaskets? if so, what type might be the best to use? does the head gasket need any type of seal? (i hate to have oil leaks after the job is done)!!

The only place I use sealant on the top end, is around the two rubber o-ringsthat go over the pilots, and in to the head gaskets. Three Bond 1104, the same as I use to seal cranck case halves

is that like a silicone sealer? i know that some silicones won't hold up but others are oil resistant ? also, on the side plates (points and tach. mounts- could these also use a sealer to make sure no oil escapes?)

It is a non hardening sealent, I think Yamabond is similiar. I don't use sealant on any of the gaskets. It make the old gasket really hard to remove if you have to go back in, and they will be ruined. A light coat of grease works well, as the gaskets can slide into place as the bolts are tightened, and if you have to remove the cover, the gasket can usually be saved.

Gaskets and sealant

Post by Peter.E » Thu Feb 14, 2008 9:53 am

I used a product called Hi-Tac made by Loctite or Permatex on all the gaskets on my CB450 vintage racer. You spray it on and it becomes sticky in a few minutes. It keeps the gasket in place when you intall it and it releases easily when you take it apart again. This is a real asset on race engines which are torn down on a regular basis. It also acts as a sealant. I love the stuff.

I've never used any sealant on a head gasket on any bike epecially OEM Honda which are just about the best quality gaskets I've ever used. I'm presently doing the heads on my 76 GL1000 and I notice that the Haynes manual states that Honda recommends a sealant on the gaskets. I checked the original Honda service manual and found no mention of sealant on the head gaskets.
