recommendation for parts on engine rebuildI'm rebuilding a 305 CA77 engine. I just want to know how important it is to replace the valves and pistons. All of mine look good, just have alot of carbon crap caked on. Thanks
Many people just "refresh" their engines by honing the cylinders installing new rings and lapping valves and putting in a new timing chain for the top end if thats all you want to do.All depends on your budget I guess and what your trying to accomplish.A rebuild means oversize pistons, rings,valves and the whole nine yards.You will have to determine the condtion of your engine and decide from there.Good luck.
What Joe mentions is exactly what I did on my CA77. 2500+ miles on after the refresh and still running strong. Carbon buildup is easy to clean off. Clean up the pistons and see if they are oversized. Might also help to check side clearance in the bore to see if the cylinder is beyond its wear limit for that piston size. If all looks ok pick up some new rings of the correct size, hone the cylinders, lap the valves and your good to go. You could even do a leak down test to double check your effort if you want.
Rebuild/RefreshHaving rebuilt Many engines from cars, trucks, boats, and cycles I think the most important thing is to first get all the parts cleaned and I mean CLEAN. Then you need to not only visually inspect you need to measure. It is impossible to see things like excess piston skirt to wall clearance or cylinder taper or out of round with your eyes. After all is measured and compared to specs then you can make a decision wheather to just freshen or rebuild including machine shop work. Best of luck

Re: recommendation for parts on engine rebuildPistons and cylinders are one thing but the valve faces and seats are another. Most of the time ya can look at the pistons/cylinders/bore and see if a set of rings and new pistons are needed. To me the valves are different. I always recommend that they be removed/inspected/stems ground to flat/intake valve face ground to correct/exhaust valve inspected for pits (common for some reason) all seats cut to HONDA spec's then lapped and made sure the surfaces are touching as HONDA made them. A lot of work? Well ya have the engine apart and want to ride and enjoy? I do valve jobs and there are those here that I've done them for. Never a problem and the head looked and worked as almost new. ...........lm
