Starter motor chain length?

Post by Geoff Hastings » Sun Mar 05, 2017 12:35 pm

Another question for you guys, I'm assembling a 1964 305 engine. When I bought the bike the starter clutch had disintergrated and had no chain on it when I stripped the engine. I managed to get another starter clutch off eBay but when I came to fit the new chain and the starter motor the chain seems far too tight. I had a spare starter and that gives the same result, everything is in line and the chain sits on the sprocket ok.
Ok, forget that question there was a burr on the back of the sprag clutch sprocket that stopped the chain seating fully. I should have looked more closely before fitting a second hand part.

Good that you solved your problem !

I just replaced my starter with a used part (1966 CB77) and the chain seems very loose. The bike starts and all, but I am wondering how taut the chain is supposed to be ?

Thanks!

As you might guess from my post my new chain has only a little slack in it. Probably only about 10mm at most, check your sprag clutch does not have excess play in the bush where it runs on the crank.
