Removing head studsRemoving head studsAnyone have as much of a hard time removing these things as I am? Any good technique to getting them out without damaging them? I have tried putting two nuts at the top and turning, but Im afraid I am going to break one off. The damn things get in the way when trying to take the engine apart!!
It's not easy. I tried myself once and ended up pulling some of the aluminum out of the threaded hole and had to repair it with helicoil. Another time when the top of the crankcase needed repair, I asked my local motorcycle machine shop to remove them and they were able to do it. I neglected to ask them what the trick was. --Randall
Try soaking the bases with PB Blaster. Then with both nuts on the stud, a little above the threads, hit directly down with a hammer, not to hard, but a good sharp blow. If you can get someone to help you, have one person grab the stud with vise grips, and the other turning the double nuts at the same time. This has worked well for me.
