-Disconnect battery and drain and remove tank (disconnect fuel lines and unscrew 2 bolts at rear of tank making sure to not loose the rubber spacers. tank will lift up at the rear and slide off backwards at the front)

-remove tappet covers and stator cover.

-rotate the engine using the 14mm bolt on the dyno taking note of valve movement. set rotation so that the arrow on the stator is pointing at the "T" mark on the plate.

-identify valve(s) that are in the fully closed position (at highest point of movement).

-check valve stem clearance using .003", .004" and .005" feeler guages.

-loosen 10mm lock nut and adjust tappet screw to .004 clearance.

-rotate stator 360 degrees and repeat on remaining valves.

Okay, now that you got the proper way to do it, here's the guerilla way:

Remove plugs and tappet covers, bike on center stand, tranny in 3rd or 4th gear.

Put a pen, pencil or wooden chopstick down one of the plug holes and very gently nudge the rear wheel until the piston comes up to TDC. Now remove chopstick and nudge the rear wheel back and forth a few degrees in each direction and notice on which side an exhaust or intake valve moves. The side with the moving valve is at TDC on exhaust, so, with the piston repositioned at TDC, adjust the valves on the opposite side.

Rotate crank 360° and do the other side. Takes all of about 10 minutes.

Easy peasey.

After you've done it a few times you can do away with the feeler gauge too and just check clearance by feel. Problem with feeler gauges is that if the tip of valve is dished you can end up with too much clearance using a gauge.
Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always had.
