insulation on stator wires

insulation on stator wires

Been prepping everything attached to crankshaft. The stator wires insulation has separated in places - this is the fabric type insulation. Is there a coating or product that can be applied to the wires to correct this?

Hi Dick, My first thought would be to replace the bad wire by cutting the old wire off with enough left to solder new wire to and use shrink tube to cover the splice.

I replaced all the cloth insulation with heat-shrink tubing - took all day, but results were good.

Nice work. This solution required you to cut every wire to install the heat shrink. Lots of work.

I had a similar issue on an S90 stator. My insulation was crumbling. I used high temp glass mat tubing. Slit the tubing and installed it on all the wires. Tied it closed with thread. This was like a fly tying exercise. I then enapsulated all of the wires with West Systems epoxy. Worked well and did not require cutting and reconnecting any wires.

Just offering this up as another possible repair method.

I like your analogy to fly-tying - could only come from an avid fisherman!
Actually, I did not have to cut any wires. The three leads each had either one, two, or three wires from the coils soldered to a type of splice - was just a matter of melting the solder, sliding the heat shrink over the wires, and re-soldering; the other three wires had a factory splice between the coils - again, melt the solder and separate, slide the heat shrink over them, and re-solder. I did only one joint at a time, so as not to incorrectly connect the wrong wires. Not something I would do for a living, however........

Interesting. My S90 might have had all those splices and I just did not see them because a lot of the original insulation was still intact. I did see one splice, so there probably were others.

I would not want to do this for a living, either.
