Cam Chain

Hello Everyone, New member here, I am in the process of freeing a stuck 305 engine from my 1961 cb77. Can anyone tell me the "trick" on removing the chain to pull the head off? I was thinking you had to remove the bottom case half, but after researching I found that the cam is perpetrated, I'm still stuck, please help any info will be greatly appreciated.

I use a Dremel cut off wheel to cut off a peen to remove a link. Take the cam cover off to get access. You can also use a special link remover tool but you will probably replace the chain anyway.

Can it be any chain link? Or does it have to be the special link with the clip?the chain position doesn't matter right? Just that the cam gear and alternator line up right?

If you have to break the chain, any link will do. However, if you remove the tensioner, the top cover and/or the bottom case, with luck you may be able to get at the connecting link (the one with the clip). A long narrow slot screwdriver is a good tool to use to poke off the clip and disassemble the link.

If the motor hasn't been apart it will have an endless chain, so you can break it at any point.

I don't think that's true. Certainly I have never come across an original cam chain which is endless although some have been replaced by CB750F cam chains which are. As well, the parts book and shop manual show only a chain with connecting link.

Honda didn't install endless cam chains in these engines.
I worked on a CB350 back around 1992 which did have a endless chain. ....................lm
