Hello fellow board members. I just purchased a 67 honda dream 305. It has set since 1979 the motor is free and the body is in good shape. The previous pulled the carb off and gave it to me in pieces. So I wanna get it running and ride it as the rat bike it is at this point. So would it be best to change all the fluids air filter rebuild the carb and buy a battery and try and fire it. Or tear it all the way down and replace all the seals and gaskets as well? Thanks Josh.

You are very lucky to get one with a free motor. Usually condensation gets in the bores and freezes up the pistons - here in the UK, at least.

To be prudent, you should strip the motor down, clean and measure everything, replacing seals and gaskets as you go. If you go that route, it will be a long time before you get it back together.

In your circumstances. I would change the oil and air filter. Clean the carb and fit it with new gaskets, then remove and completely clean out the centrifugal oil filter which lives under the circular cover on the left hand engine cover. The filter is chain driven so you may want to take the entire clutch cover off to get it all back together nicely. The amount and type of dirt in the filter should tell you how the engine has been used / maintained.

When you have it running, listen for any nasty noises and get the timing, carburettor and valve clearances sorted.

If it turns without any funny noises, I'd just do the following and give it a try:
Drain the oil and clean the slinger as G-Man suggests
Make sure the cam chain tensioner isn't locked up and let it self-adjust
Check/adjust the valve clearances and shoot a bunch of oil on the cams/rockers
Set the points and timing and check for spark
De-rust and flush the fuel tank
Rebuild the carb with the original brass, new o-rings, gaskets and fuel lines
FILL THE OIL, kick the tires and go (slow).
It may smoke some at first, give the rings a little time to wake up.
Search this forum for how-to's on all of this.
If there's more than 12k on the clock, you may run into compression and transmission issues.

Thanks for all the advice i dont think it was barley rode title and clock say just over 1,700.00 miles. It is a 67 last tagged in ohio in 79. So given that info is there other concers i should have? Also the vin matches has a ca number but under model it says c72. Could that just be a typo? I am gonna knock the dust and dirt off and ill post pics. I found a manual for it i should recieve it next week again thanks for giving me a starting point.

1700 miles is very low, but I would still take the steps above especially with the fuel system. Time is more critical there than mileage. Also, it's important to know the VIN's on the frame and engine in order to get the right parts and other info... Pics show where to find the frame and engine numbers. They are normally a few hundred off. The number on the Ohio title should match the frame number. C72 would be an early 250 Dream model I think only sold in 1961 in the US. Probably a typo if the frame is a CA78-XXXXXXX and the engine is a CA77E-XXXXXXX. Let us know what you find...

Hey there thanks for the pics. Where are the frame numbers located on yours? I have a baby dream frame laying around and its vin is by the battery box and straight. The bike has a green paint job and has had two previous owners i see on the title could they have painted over it? U can tell it wasn't done professionally and there are no places where it looks to have been scratched up as to hide the vin number.
