torque for re-tightening the nuts and bolts on the case

Post by arseatea » Wed Jul 02, 2014 11:53 am

This question probably has been answered many times, but I will ask once more. What is the torque for tightening the bolts and nuts on the split case? I thought 20 ft pounds, and that seems ok for the 14 mm nuts, and too much for the 10 mm nuts and bolts. I don't want to strip out the threads. Also, in my book it only gives a sequence to removing the bolts and nuts, not for reinstalling. I presume I did the right thing by installing them in the same sequence that I took them off. thanks for your help.. Ron

Thanks Dave. Appreciate that info if you have it. I have searched the forum and after reading post after post, I cannot find an answer. I would have thought it would have been asked and answered many times, but I guess not...Ron..

Bill Silver engine repair guide reads "Torque the 14mm nuts first in a 'cross' pattern. Torque to 15 ft/lbs. Continue to install and tighten the remaining 6mm crankcase bolts snugly."

torque settings for crank case reassembly

Post by PhilD » Thu Jul 03, 2014 6:02 pm

The original Honda workshop manual and the Clymer guide don't list any values for tightening the upper / lower crank cases. Bill Silver recommends tightening the 14mm nuts first to 15ft lbs in a 'cross' pattern and then tightening the remaining 6mm bolts snugly being sure to use the one special nut and aluminium washer on the stud next to the oil pump. Must admit for many years I just used to tighten gradually in the recommended sequence until everything was tight and never had any problems. I now have the luxury of a torque wrench so will follow the Bill Silver guide on my current rebuild. I see DaveM is based in Wirral which is where I come from originally having grown up in Eastham and have great memories of riding my CB77 around the Brimstage bends!
