With a little daylight and a lot of advice from Davo along the way, I was able to fix the bike today.
The problem? Needle clip came loose inside the carburetor. Once I pulled the seat, air box and tube, it was obvious where the problem was. That was an easy fix. What came next wasn't.
When I put the slide and everything back into the top of the carb, I noticed the slide was sticking at WOT. ??? Never did that before. Davo suggested I pull the carb and sand the bore of the carb a bit to free things up. This took quite a while, and I had to use some 200 grit sandpaper to get the slide to clear, and then buff out the bore with some 800 so it was nice and smooth, but I got the slide moving freely up and down in the bore after a while.
Then I cleaned the carb out entirely-- which it needed I think my pilot jet was a bit clogged-- put everything back together and I was back on the road.
No intake leak, but I do have a question. How tight on the intake studs is too tight? My general rule is use a short crescent wrench and tighten until you can't tighten any more with only the strength of two fingers. I figure that's fine. How bout the rest of you?
Rode a few miles on fresh plugs, and the plug looks a bit grey, so I figure there's no leak.
