Dumb Questions?

Post by jvmills » Tue Apr 03, 2012 5:32 pm

I posted this earlier under different/wrong section so am repeating.
1) When adjusting tappet clearance, am I measuring the gap between the top of the valve or the retainer for the valve spring?
2) Ed's tune up directions say "Large vise grip pliers (to put on the bolt head at the rotor so engine crank will be able to be moved back and forth) The crank will go "OVER CENTER" if you use wrenches!!!!!!!!" I don't get it. It moves over center unless I hold it there. What am I missing?

1. You measure the gap between the adjuster screwand the end of the valve.
2. put the engine at tdc on the firing stroke, if both valves are tight(partway open) it's on the exhaust stroke, go around one more turn to tdc. You don't have to hold it perfectly at tdc, if the crank moves a small amount it will still be on the base circle of the cam and be in position to adjust.
