The stock charging system and 9ah batteries on these things is barely adequate. Make sure the battery is fully charged and don't idle for a long time especially with the lights on. Battery Tender Jr is a good investment. I haven't tried any of the more modern rectifiers but that may help too. There are a lot of posts on the charging system in the electrical section.
I've read most of the significant threads on charging problems. Not a great system, for sure. But battery voltage on mine while at 3000 rpms is 12.2V and I gotta believe I need more than that. All of the wiring and rectifier checks out. Now I just need to get the bike running again and perform the checks in Bill Silver's literature.
