oil filteroil filterHi, can someone walk me through cleaning the oil filter on a 1967 CA77 305 twin? Jim
I'm new at this myself. I just bought a '62 Dream and just did my first oil change. They don't give much detail in the book, but all I did was unscrew the bolt underneath to let the oil drain out, and screwed off the round filter cover. There's a little half round clip that holds the filter cover on. Squeeze it with some pliers to take it off and remove the cover and shaft. Then clean out the inside using gasoline. I made a big mistake and pulled out the whole oil filter rotor, which is attached by a chain inside. I had to take off the entire crank case cover to put the chain back on the gear that rotates it (all day project, stripped screws, needed to get a new gasket, etc) so don't take out the rotor - just the cover and shaft!! Hope that helps!
There's a little pin in the end of the shaft, and the idea was to just take the pin out, remove the washer and cover leaving the shaft and spinner in place... I've never been able to get a cover off without hitting it (carefully with a wooden dowel) from the back side, so that requires that you remove the whole assembly. On a '67 with the late style case, you can hook the chain back up without removing the whole left side cover. Kigs has the early version and I think that's probably why they went to the later version with the big hole.
Thank you 48!! I thought I was losing it! My bike looked nothing like the pics in my parts manual that came with the bike (which was for a CA77) but I guess it was for a later model! No wonder I'm having a hard time with the parts I order and why my oil change was a nightmare! I ended up taking the whole oil rotor out with the chain, and then needed to open the case to put it back together (and get new gaskets, new screws) I need to find the manual for my year bike (1962).
If you want, send me an email to swmrescue@cox.net and I'll send you the pdf I have. The diagrams tend to be of the earlier parts, but it gives the correct part numbers based on the engine or frame number. Might be the same one you already have, but its worth a look.
oil changethanks guys, unfortunately this will all have to wait till spring. I've been spending all this unseasonably warm weather riding my bikes. no power in barn. gonna hang up the MC`s and start skiing, peace
