Ballpark cost of a rebuild

Post by Kigsby » Wed Oct 19, 2011 1:50 pm

I'm looking to buy a Dream. Some I've found have engines working, some not. I would like to do as much of the restore as possible, but I don't think I would do a rebuild. So when trying to decide which bike to get for what price, I would like to factor in the possible cost of an engine rebuild. Now I know there will be differences depending on location, the condition of the engine, etc so I'm just looking for a ballpark. I have no idea if its $100 or $1000. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm no expert but I would guess if you paid a pro, you would be looking at $2000 or more depending on what an engine needed. If you did the work yourself, I'd say somewhere around $1500. That would be for new sleeves, pistons, rings and machinist work to do the boring, rebuild the head and maybe even new mains. That would be to do it right the first time. Then on the other hand you could short cut and do a refresh job the cheep way but it wouldn't last long. That would involve a home done hone and new rings, static leak test on the valves and for a couple hundred bucks you're on the road. For a while at least.
That's my best guess as for costs go. Hope I've helped,,,,,,,,Rusty

I had no idea a rebuild would cost that much! I would have thought I could get a whole new engine for that! Now when I'm looking at a bike to buy, I'll need to keep that in mind. Some for sale aren't running and I would have to assume the worse and factor that price in. That's a big help - Thanks Rusty!
