Excessive oil filter rotot wear

Post by Dana01 » Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:04 pm

Hey all. I'm starting this as a new thread even though it's part of the long tear down initiated by a broken tooth.

While removing the oil filter rotor assembly I see excessive wear at the mating surface between the rotor body and the case. It looks like there was a lot of heat, some dark burn-like rings on both surfaces, and even some Aluminum shavings folded over. Also, the rotor isn't smooth when I spin it ... sort of like fine grit inside somewhere.

Looking at the parts diagram, I'm guessing that the filter rotor washer was missing (I didn't see one on removal), causing the damage (p/n 15493-259-000).

I'll post pics later, but I hope this is the issue.

The more I tear into this, the more things I see telling me the bike was severely abused, engine rebuilt almost correctly, and it's a very good thing I'm doing this.
