Starting clutch roller cap and spring?Starting clutch roller cap and spring? While cleaning the alternator roter, all 3 rollers and the "starting clutch roller cap" fell out. It looks like a spent 22 rifle shell with a spring inside. I am not sure just how to re-install the rollers, or where the starting clutch roller cap goes. Also the spring in the cap is in pieces. I have several aftermarket springs in my shop of the right diameter, but have no idea how long it should be. I have the Clymer service and repair handbook, but it has very little info. I searched the archives and could not find any reference to the starting clutch roller cap. I appreciate any help. Thanks..Ron
Re: Starting clutch roller cap and spring?Ron, DO NOT use any old springs, even if they look identical. It'll end in tears! The springs are the specific length and tension to cause the rollers to retract, into the three caves in the clutch housing, under centrifugal force. The parts are items 7, 8 & 26 here. Other Honda dealers sell the parts as well as WHHY. Check that the three screws that fix the clutch ass'y to the rotor are tight and staked. To refit the rotor:

starter clutchThanks for all the good info. I have ordered new springs, caps, and rollers from WHHY and they should be here in a few days. Do I have to remove the starting clutch outer cover in order to install the springs and caps or can they be worked in from the outside? I know there is not a lot of room for large fingers, but the 3 screws are tight. It appears that I can use a pick to remove debris, clean with a small bottle brush, and install the springs and caps with thin needle-nose pliers. Meanwhile, I will keep you'all informed as I put this engine back together. I am sure that I will have many more questions. Right now, I am mostly waiting for warmer days.
Re: starter clutchNo. Yes. Use carb cleaner, switch contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol, shake out then allow to dry. Don't let the components attach to the rotor magnets; they'll get magnetised, and that's not good. In spite of what some manuals state, assemble the bits and leave them dry/unlubed. Ed (lm) will no doubt re-explain if there's any dissent! G'luck.
Yes Mike, different smellings. Maj is the Brit version of Mall, but both pronounced <mayorca>; Castellano & Catalan (indigenous but dialectic here) Spanish spellings, but similar pronunciations. The Brit spelling -- it's unclear where the 'j' came from -- is sometimes pronounced <majorca>, but only by the uneducated..... I just change it occasionally to see if anyone notices (you guys should know me by now; I just love to toss in the odd small grenade)!
