As a side note, some have attributed the pronounced clunk into first gear when first starting to insufficient oil on the plates.

This was so common on Yamaha FJR's that the factory even authorized clutch removal and friction plate soaking under warranty. The theory was that the factory didn't fully soak the frictions in oil prior to assembly when new.

The re-soaking did not solve the "problem"

Some even drilled additional oiling holes in the basket trying to eliminate the clunk.

The only solution seemed to be moving the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in to break the adhesion before starting the engine.
