rocker arm wear

Post by nander » Sun Nov 15, 2009 1:31 pm

what are reliable indicators of excessive rocker arm wear?

below are some photos. they have some flat spots and the chrome is worn away in places.

my cams were somewhat scored and had bluing in some areas. i have a much better looking set of cams i am going to swap in. however, i'm wondering whether i should also replace the rocker arms. will these old rocker arms score up the new cams?

If I was in your place I would look for a set of the later rockers with the oiler hole in the heel face. I'm not certain as to whether or not they fit the same rocker pins though; I'd say they do as there's only one part nr. I'm interested in others' opinions / expertise on this one......

thanks for the reply steve.
i wasn't aware there was a design update. that sounds like just the ticket. my cams and rocker arms look like they they could have used a little more direct oiling over their 23k mile lives.

anyone out there have a not too abused set of the later rocker arms they would like to part with?

Hi Nander,

The surface on the rockers show typical wear, this is a very good example how these precise surfaces look like if using an oil which cannot withstand the temperature and pressure for a longer period. Having this sever damage after 23.000 miles says it all. Even worse, the pieces of hardened surface which are lost from the rocker circulate through the engine to do the real damage to the oil pump, bearings of the crank and transmission.

As you can see on the pictures, there's a oil hole which squirts oil on the surface, so there is plenty of oil in that area, unless the oil pump is not within specs anymore.

Buy new ones, and put some decent oil in it, and your troubles will be over.
