Floppy kick start

Post by prima5star » Thu Oct 06, 2005 5:35 pm

I just did a top-end swap around on a CB77 to avoid fixing a stuck transmission which went off fine and now runs well. I put something back together in the kickstart side cover wrong though because when I kickstart it the lever doesn't return and the engine drives it around as far as it will go and then rides on the internal ratchet mechanism. I'm pretty sure it's not in the transmission as the lower end came from a known good running bike that holed a piston (PO timing adjustment!) so, what do I look for? The pawl that the kickstart arm mounts to is a little loose because of a crack in the case, but that doesn't seem like a probable cause...

The engine is an earlier two sets of points model.

Thanks!
Matt

Before you install the side case you need to turn the kick shaft clockwise to stop and push the kick lever forward so the dots/zeros line up then slip the lug onto the shaft. This will place the kick lever at the correct angle for your foot to not ride on the kick lever as you ride. If you took the parts off the case you may have the spring installed reversed. ..................LM

Spend a half hour this afternoon and got the kickstart working properly. Here's what I did:

Preloaded spring by twisting kickstart pawl until dots lined up as suggested. Installed kickstart lever in normal position while dots were aligned. Twisted kickstart shaft sticking out of engine counter clockwise as far as it would go. Used kickstart lever to realign dots then slid cover on.

Kickstart turns engine over and it returns without help. When the engine is running there is no buzz from the transmission indicating the ratchet mechanism is engaged.

Thanks!

Now to get the clutch sorted...
