camshaft boo-boocamshaft boo-booOK, so I'm overhauling the head of my '65 CP77 (same as CB77) engine for the first time. I'm doing fine up to page 51 of Bill Silver's Engine Repair Guide, where he says to tap on the camshaft locking bolt at the left end of the camshaft. Well, I'm tapping, and the bolt's not loosening. So I tap and bang some more. No luck. Then I wake up and realize I've banged the camshaft and bearing races about 1/8" or more out of position, towards the right side of the engine. Oops! Bill didn't say anything about that possibility...So all I can do to recover is to bang on the OTHER end of the camshaft (at the ignition pointd lobe) and hope for the best. Which I did. Problem is, I don't see a reference point for knowing exactly when the camshaft is back in the right place. I tried to eyeball aligning the cam lobes with the rocker arms, but there's plenty of error there. I also tried test-fitting the right side cover (that holds the points mounting plate) onto the head, and kept tapping the camshaft back to the left until the mounting plate just seated onto the head. But I have no confidence that's good enough. So my question is: how do I know when the camshaft is back in the correct position??? Thanks in advance!!!<br />Jesmed
Re: camshaft boo-booYou are on the track as you use the end caps to determine the correct position. If ya are trying to remove the cams that's another answer....................LM
