cl450 petcock question

bought a couple of cl450s.. a 70 and 72 model..
petcock leaks badly at where it couples to tank.. it looks like there was some kind of gasket there.. and yes, the switch valve gasket/donut is shot as well and leaks...
but what goes at the coupling nut.. was it a flat hose type gasket or a round oring type gasket. all i have left is black goo...
carbs are coming apart and being cleaned as we speak.. but the 70 model did run while leaking like a sieve. I suspect the clutch is bad as well but we'll see on it.
as usual, the manual is on order and I'm stuck in Dallas and it too hard to rebuild farm tractors in an RV park.. so it will have to be motorcyles... I did sell the nice running cl77 as it was ready for a restorer at this point.
Thanks in advance.. Bill

i had the same time on my 66 sh. ther is rebuild kits on retro bikes, but i found a flat looking rubber in a grove in the nut and used an o-ring to fit, also housing on petcock was rutted off alittle and i reassembled it with honda bond and used teflon tape on tank side and is holding good.

yes, that did the trick.. new oring and bending the selector spring will buy me time to get a petcock rebuild kit. Actually its worked well for a couple of weeks now. Thanks for the info.. Now I got to chase some shifting problems and oil leaks on the two 450s.. I may have to keep one of these as they cruise a lot better at highway speeds and have a really great high volume oil pump in them. Still fighting some carb problems but getting closer... May have to breakdown and put a carb kit in them. The carbs were full of a jello like substance in the bowls.. and the jets... wow..

One of the 450's would not shift.. the shift shaft is broke where the paw meets the shift drum. The broken part bounced around and chipped the oil pump, and also the oil filter/spinner. Looks like more parts to source..
The other 450 I am currently riding around but the shifter will not return to center most times.. So I will pull it after I get the first bike fixed.
Anyone have any 450 shift shaft(shift spindle), oil pump housing and oil filter (spin type filter)?? This one is a '72 or k5 I believe.
Thanks,, Bill
I wonder what the cruise speed of a 450 is?? Can you do 70mph all day,, or is 65mph better?
The 305 scramble seems to prefer 55-60mph.
I've got a three parts bikes that are cb77s that I am trying to get a single bike together, so I can see what speed the superhawk is comfortable at. (never had a cb, alway cl's)

Got an oil spinner and an oil pump off ebay..The 450 has an awesome oil pump.
Still looking for a shift shaft or shift spindle as Honda calls it. used or new would be wonderful. its a k5 or 72 model cl450 but I think other years will fit.
thanks in advance....
The other 450 is doing nicely and the shifter may loosen up with driving,, sometimes it returns to center with the new high detergent oil and zddp wear additives doing its job. I only get to ride it once a week or so due to late hours.
