CL 175 Scrambler 1971

Post by Nomad » Mon Jun 01, 2009 8:43 pm

Won on Ebay , with title , new battery (dead) , turn signals did not work , brought it home charged the battery turned the petcock and key and roared to life raced down the street woo woo , then pulled to a stop sign and it died , starter would not engage , bump started and I was off again (solenoid was sticky) noticed fuel leaking from the float bowls so ordered a Keyster carb kit it was shipped with 86 jets , flip them over and they look like 98 but are useless to me , but the gaskets are good however the floatbowl has a crack and is seeping :( replacement float bowl and were off again but now it wont idle , it is firing in 1 cylinder , work on the plug caps and wires and it fires but the other side stops :( I walk away and start it up again later and the issue changes sides again and now it has smoke coming out the muffler , WTF? the oil level is way up and smells like gas , change and add correct amount , me thinks that gas is passing unburned by the piston rings causing more issues .... here is an odd one when i turn the petcock off with the bike running it revs really high 7000rpm before it runs out of gas , I have 90 jets in that came with it and the needle is in the second from the top slot the top crankcase vent is sputtering out vapor , I got a oil mist spray when i opened the dipstick ( what was I thinking?) oh yeah when I checked the compression it was 90 in both pistons .

any other Scrambler owners out there with similar experience? advice?

Have you messed with timing or cleaned points? If not that's where you need to go next. Without fire, fuel is most assuredly leaking past the rings into the crank. Not so good for lubrication properties . I would sort out the spark issues before you try and run it again.

You also might wan't to recharge the battery, from your description it sounds as if your charging circuit is faulty causing the battery to run down as you ride.

BTW: It is normal for the engine to race when you shut off the fuel as you induce a "lean" condition. Congrats on the purchase.

Post by Nomad » Wed Jun 10, 2009 9:11 pm

should have rebuilt each one alone vs placing all parts in the carb soak , with the slides backwards gas was fouling the plugs alternately driving me nuts .. works good now , just need new rings ...thanks for the suggestions

Been there, done that. ask Loudmouse he was the one who talked me through it. I was embarrased to say the least.
