Ordered a points shaft from David Silver and it doesn't fit - the shaft is a slightly smaller diameter where it rides in the camshaft at the outside end. That appears to be the only difference (the new one is in the foreground of the picture).
I ordered 30310-268-000 for my CB77E-108333 engine which I thought was the right one based on the parts manual and a number of online parts fiches. There are also -010 and -030 versions (the -030 version is superceded by the -000 according to the David Silver Spares website).
There are two versions of the right camshaft and it seems to change at 109755.
Either I ordered the wrong one, or they sent the wrong one which is possible, because it was just in a plastic bag with the part number handwritten on.
Any experience out there?
Points Shaft
Re: Points ShaftThat part did change at 1000795.
HONDA made the shaft diameter smaller for some reason. In some cases parts "will work with all years" but not in this case. The seller sent ya the wrong part. .........lm
The reason for the change in diameter was probably to simplify manufacture. The later ones have both ends of the shaft ground to the same diameter. This and the simplification of the camshaft bore were an attempt to reduce cost of this fairly complex area. The bore of the hollow camshaft could now be made with a single tool pass instead of two separate ones. (probably broached)
When you look at the CB160 and CB250 compared with the early twins, Honda were really getting the hang of production engineering by the end of the 1960s. That probably meant that they could make four cylinder engines economically thereafter. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
