1961 CB72 Project
G,
I was having this same runout problem also at first. Along with not being able to control exact 180 degrees indexing. This is what prompted me to spending the 40 plus hours to build my Heavy duty fixtures. Those center section splines are the issue, Twisting and not staying centered. I have now been able to maintain .001" max runout. btw: I check stroke index pre rod assembly in vee blocks on surface plate with height gauge on rod journal. Tim Not much 'actual' progress this week as I am away from home. I did pick up some nice items that have been waiting at my friends house, though.
These oversized (15.1 mm) wrist pins were ordered before I decided to bush the small ends so they will go into my spares box. These early shocks turned up for the princely sum of $9.99 on eBay. They are not the very early type with aluminium covers but the next ones along with chrome plated steel lower covers and steel uppers. Later ones went to plastic covers and a different, welded-on, lower clevis. These will be a bit more durable than the flimsy early ones. I'm hoping to do a set of spares for the '61 bike and a set for my '62 that I am collecting parts for. These look like they haven't been messed with. Documentation from these early bikes is fascinating and I like to pick up whatever I can. The lovely little break-in card in the shape of a speedo is a lovely touch. Last time one shaft was better that I needed ant the other I just couldn't get close. After a week away from it I was able to think it through and managed to get both shafts running at around 1 thou.
Next it was time to put on some bearings. The alternator side is the later type ball race with the shield, which goes on the inside. I installed the bearings in the press using the support fixture I made for pressing out the big ends. My reasoning was that I only wanted to press against the outer wheel and not disturb the alignment of the crank, when pressing on the bearings. It was nice to get the crank finished up so that I can get on with the rest of the bottom end. The gearbox is next. It has been sitting in a box for far to long. Time to get it stripped and cleaned.
