A small group of six of us did a 1300 mile trip around Lake Superior on 305s. We did cheat a bit as we had a chase vehicle carrying our gear. 200 mile days is a decent goal. We had no mechanical problems besides my broken clutch cable and one of the Scramblers ran out of gas.

Set your bike up to be comfortable. If your hands get numb after a ride get some higher bars to so that you are not leaning on them so much.

The 305 will handle the hills ok, at least they did for us going though some very hilly areas in Canada. But I think you may be in for some much larger hills than we experienced.

That little cb160 is going to get a workout. A real workout. That bike will see full throttle most of the time I am guessing, especially if you hit any wind.

I would seriously consider a shorter test trip before you go all out just to see what shakes loose. 4000 miles is a long way on bikes that old.

agreed! i'm thinking a few trips to newport and back through the cascades which is a pretty moderate mountain range, at least compared to back home in utah.

if it can't handle, we'll work something else out, i'm going to keep my eyes open for a CA77 for a decent price. might just do that instead. but really it boils down to money, so if for some reason any of you blokes feel like 500 a month payments on a dream, let me know :p haha.

Gun, out-of-sight, such great advice being posted for you! Good luck.
One comment from me: "ur nuts" (IMHO) I would be fearful of the 160... good luck dude... sounds like something I would have tried back when I was still in my 20's... In the 70's it was nothing to hitch-hike 'cross the country, so having your own ride would have been a delight. Having logged most my miles on a GL1000 or a Z900 I'll tell you comfort is most important down the stretch. Keep us posted.

well, i happen to be in my 20's! so here's to be reckless :)

I think i'd rather put the cb160 in on a trade for a dream. course, the cb160 is probably only worth 8-900 bucks... so i'd still have a ways to go on a roadtrip worthy dream.

well, after sleeping on it, i think you ol' bats have talked some sense into me.
Really, i always wanted a 78 or 79 GL1000, and what better excuse to get one than a few thousand mile road trip?

ya nuts if you think i'm not going to 'spray chrome' the side of the gas tank to look like a superhawk.

I'm thinking i'll trade the cb160 + the difference for a 78/79 gl in road trip condition. I never did like the farings though.
Figure i'll get to posting on craigslist in the next month or so. I see those bikes sell for about 2500 in great condition.
besides, my girlfriend would rather have a dream than a cb160.
it's hard for us young guns to admit when we have a dumb idea, and even harder to not follow through with it anyway.

Still going to seek the cb77 engine gets rebuilt though.
