CB77 Rotor/StatorCB77 Rotor/StatorHi all,
The charging system on my CB77 is fairly tired - one coil on the stator is burnt out and the rotor has lost practically all its magnetism. Just wondering whether anyone (preferably in the UK) has a good, working rotor and stator they would be willing to sell? Also I have been told that it's best to have a rotor and stator that are a 'matching' pair. Is this the case, or can I get a rotor and stator from different sources and use them together? Thanks, Steph.
I had the same issue with mine a couple of years ago, and here is the solution I came up with:
Rick's Motorsport Electrics stator: http://www.amazon.com/RICKS-ELECTRIC-H- ... B008YIFPL4 You may want to contact the seller to make sure they still have them in stock. The part number is 99-102, and they've been discontinued for a couple of years now. At the time I bought mine, Smith Family Powersports was the only place I found that had it in stock -- even Rick's didn't have them. Rick's offers a stator rewinding service, but sadly not for a CB77. Don't know anyone who could do it, but maybe there is someone in the UK who can (you guys seem to have a plethora of companies that can restore and rebuild the oddest machinery, so maybe there's a chance). Rotor: Tough one. If you can find an NOS one, get the one that does not have the 'L' stamped on it. That is the earlier one, and supposedly has more of a 'charge' to it. Now, having said that, you're talking about an almost 50 year-old part that's been sitting on a shelf, and who knows how it's been stored. So even a brand new one may have lost some of its magnetism. And get ready to pay $$$ for an NOS one. I got mine from Terry at Western Hills Honda, and I seem to recall that it was over $350. Combine that with the Rick's stator ($200), and your wallet is starting to feel it. Plus, since you live in the UK, I have no idea what shipping costs would be. And you'd probably want to replace the rectifier while you're at it, and maybe replace the rear bulb with an LED unit (helps a tiny bit). And a good battery! With all these changes to my bike I'm charging about 14 volts, which is likely more than this system ever did when it was new (the system has been often called a 'maintenance' system rather than a 'charging' system). So that's likely to be the best scenario for creating the most 'charge' for a CB77 -- at least that's been my experience. Thanks very much for all that info Vince, I'll have a look into it :)
Fortunately there are at least a couple of companies here in the UK that will rewind a CB77 stator so I'll probably go down that route. I've already replaced the battery, and the rectifier seems to be working fine, although I'll be keeping an eye on it. We don't have to ride with the headlight on in daytime in the UK, so the charging system doesn't need to be perfect. Rotor is looking like more of an issue, there is a guy locally who has a couple in better condition than mine so I guess I'll start with the best of those and see how it performs... Cheers, Steph.
