No power after meddling

Post by dreaming » Tue Jul 05, 2011 1:56 pm

K. Running rich, no power in 4th, bla bla bla. so I go to set the timing again, pull the points plate off (it's a ca72) clean with black sand paper. then the wiring from the points slips out. I tried to put it back per diagram on forum and no spark. marker on f, points closed, gap set to 14, no spark. So I start cleaning connections and pulled the spark plug wiring off and the other two wires off the cylinder, what ever it is it was warm. then below that ther was a smaller cylinder that had two wires coming out of it and two large wires coming from my battery. I put it back together and now NOTHING. bike is completely dead. Battery is good, i can touch a wrench to the two wires going into to the smaller cylinder and she turns over, but thats it.

A) where did I go wrong reconnecting wires to large cylinder? There was a + post and another post were the spark plug wires p[lug into and a green and a black wire.
B) What the heck are these cylinders and what do they do?

REALLY FRUSTRATING!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Sounds to me that you may have hooked the wire to the points in the wrong spot. Make sure that it's between the washer by the nut and the spring and insulated from the points frame. If it grounds to the frame, the coil (large cylinder) will get warm but no spark will be generated (which happens when the ground to the coil is broken by the points opening.) Black wire to the + post, Green wire (goes to the points and condenser) on the other small post (may be marked -, I'm not sure.)

The other (small cylinder) is the starter solenoid, activated by the starter button on the handlebar.

k. I'll give that a shot, as far as my points wire goes. Black is connected to the +, and green to the other, and still completely dead bike. Could me doing something to the starter soleniod cause a dead bike? When I take the two big wires from the soleniod off and connect them the motor turns over nicely, but when hooked up to the soleniod, nothing.

Have you checked the fuse in the main wire from the battery? That will kill everything (including lights) except the power wire going to the starter- therefore allowing you to run the starter by bypassing the solenoid.

If you had the switch on when removing wires it would have been easy to short out the fuse by grounding a hot wire.

NICE CALL ON THE FUSE!!! Old wire was pretty nasty, so I changed it out, and BINGO! POWER! But I set the gap back to 14 on "II" and it acts like it doesn't want to start. just coughs and puffs but no run. I held it on "II" and with the switch on I slid the feeler gauge it and my other hand accidently touched the vise-grips and it gave me a shock, if that matters. It's a ca72 by the way. I suck. :(

Well at least your getting somewhere! It sounds like your setting the points wrong. They're set at .014" at the highest spot on the lobe (not at the F and with the switch off- I think you know why now!) After you set the points, then hook up a test light so that one lead is hooked to the points wire connection and the other end to ground. Turn the key on, turn the engine over (by hand with the vice-grips), the light should come on at the "F" (points just opening), if not, turn the plate the points are mounted to until it does.

Ur a GENIUS! Pulled out the timing light and tried to see where it was firing and I guess when I put the plate back on it changed the timing 'cause it was about 30 degrees retarded. Adjusted, and "ROOOOM". But of course it wasn't going to stop there. After riding for a few minutes it loses power, then I get a "POP". Immediately following the pop I get full power for about a minute, until I put significant load on the motor and then it does it again.
