Mounting Location of Ground Wire on CL-77

Post by davondle » Tue Jul 07, 2015 4:01 pm

Can anyone help me with where the ground wire mounts to the frame/engine? Ground cable has 10mm eyelet so I assume an upper frame bolt? If so, which side of the frame and is it supposed to be 1.) on the bolt head side in contact with the frame mount flange or 2.) between the frame mount flange and the engine casing mount tab, or 3.)the nut/lock washer side in contact with the engine casing mount tab? Trying to get it right and cannot find this in any manuals. Thanks!

Right side of the rectifier, under the mounting nut and washer.

Thanks, Stan. I noticed that you have a '67 CL77. Do you know if that was the same mounting for all years? Reason that I ask is that the end of the grounding end of the two straps I have (old one and nicer replacement) both have a clip that takes a 10 mm bolt, which is a lot larger than the mounting bolt coming out of the side of the rectifier...really loose fit for that location? Appreciate you help!

I believe it goes on the top left rear 10mm engine/frame bolt. I believe it gets attached at the nut end grounding against the motor case. (Head to the outside).

No battery ground wire went from the battery direct to the rectifier on any CB72/77 CL72/77 bikes issued by HONDA.
Tom is pretty much correct.
You will see a 3/4" +- hole in the FRAME at the top/left/rear engine mounting bolt.
The cable goes through the hole them bends to the front and fits on the bolt at that location. .........................lm

Thanks for correcting me! PO must have put it there and I assumed it was right. I'll look into rerouting mine.

Routing of Ground Wire

Post by davondle » Fri Jul 10, 2015 11:36 pm

Thank you everyone! The input from "Loud Mouse" was spot on. Routes perfectly, the 10 mm eyelet fits appropriately over the engine mounting bolt, and it even matches the curvature the had set into the old ground wire casing over the years. Problem solved...now on the the next "mystery". One of these days this bike will get done and thanks to you all, hopefully it will be correct. Valuable resources!
