Reading 12v from battery ground??

Post by Pauleye » Sat May 09, 2015 12:05 pm

Hello, my 66 cl77 is ready to ride only problem is I can only go for about 20 min before battery is completely dead. In an earlier post LM quoted remove ground terminal from battery and test bare metal to ground on battery and if you have voltage something is wrong. I pinpointed it to the 12 V going to the rectifier. If I disconnect the 12 V going to the rectifier problem solved. There's no better feeling than riding my scrambler! Can anyone help me? Thanks paul.

We talked on the phone this morning I think? If so you said you had a few rectifiers on hand. Even if they aren't testing well you might try one of those just to see if the short goes away.

Hi Kevin yes we did talk this morning. I installed the second rectifier with still the same issue. I will try a third I'm just hoping this problem wont affect the new one. All these rectifiers I'm trying are original and according to prior posts they are probably bad do to age.

I would see if you could make sure the problem is solved before putting a new rectifier into it. The short might damage a new one.

Third rectifier same problem. I will say that only when it's grounded (bolted on) I get the 12v. battery negative to frame ground.

Completely isolated. 12v only if grounded.
