Time for a new CB77 battery?

Post by akpasta » Mon Nov 18, 2013 1:53 pm

Hello,

I believe it may be time for a new battery on my 64' CB77. It's been about two years and +5k miles. The only symptom I have is the electric starter only turns about 8-10 times on a full battery charge before draining the battery and requiring a kick to start the bike because the battery can't turn the starter-- or so it would seem. Bike still runs and fires up with kick but the battery doesn't seem to hold enough to get the electric starter going for very long. My daily commute also isn't enough to charge it up. I guess I'll check my battery levels before buying a new one, but I've been pretty good about keeping those up over the years, checking it every 6 months or so.

I suppose there could also be a problem with the electric starter, but my guess is it's the battery as the starter works great when the battery is charged (fires up immediately) but after about 10 cranks on it, the starter wont' fire and the battery needs charging again.

What batteries do y'all recommend and where can I get them online?

Thank you.

I've got one of these that's outlasted two Youasas and going strong...

If you don't have a low-amp tender, one they sell with it works good for me. A regular 2-amp charger will fry it they say. I got an extra pigtail and put it on my riding mower, plug in the night before.
'62 CB77. "It's a rider."
