Plug wire covering CL77

Post by sibes67 » Sun Nov 25, 2012 9:14 pm

The length of one plug wire is covered about 90% with a softer, black outer "skin", the other is maybe only 70% of the length covered.
Is the outer covering readily available at Honda shops, and is this something that is necessary?
Any colors available? Thanks.

As far as I know its not something that you will be able to find at your local Honda dealer. I don't think it was ever offered as a replacement part. You might be able to find something similar at McMaster-Carr, Fastenal, Grainger, or other online shop. Its not really needed though and new copper core wire will do just fine without it.

Ron - I went through this a couple of years ago to get the OEM look on those wires. What I ended up doing after some trial and error was using neoprene heat shrink. I cut it a couple of inches longer than the finished length and shrank it over a 5/16 dia steel rod. If you want to try it, here's a couple of tips:

1) Pre-heat the mandrel to 325F in the oven.
2) Blow some talc in the shrink before you put it over the mandrel.
3) Put the shrink on the mandrel leaving an inch of the shrink hanging off the end of the mandrel. This will form a nipple that you can carefully blow compressed air through to release the shrink from the mandrel if it doesn't slide right off.
4) Cook it for 5 minutes or so, turning it once or twice.
5) Let the whole thing cool off before you take the tubing off the mandrel or it will continue to shrink.
6) Clean out the talc and cut to size.

1/2" neoprene heat shrink with .035" recovered wall from insulationproducts.com

I had to buy $35 worth which was a lot, so I made up a number of wire sets and gave all of my 305 friends a set and sold the rest on ebay. I think I broke about even when it was all said and done. I attached the best pic I have of the finished product.

Really G - I'm blushing... Not so much smart, but the "madness" you talked about in another thread! Hours spent perfecting a process that 10 people in the world would care about.
