Adding CB100 Controls...help with throttle

Post by cyclon36 » Wed May 26, 2010 8:28 am

Hey all,

The bike I recently purchased came with a winker retrofit. The PO used the dimmer switch on the left side and converted it to a winker switch which doesn't really work well. I want to keep the blinkers for safety reason but want to upgrade to a more straight forward design (left/right switch movement).

Anyway, long story short, I ended up purchasing a CB100 left side switch NOS which is pretty nice. has the horn button and built in mirror perch. Since I hate things being asymmetrical, I had to buy the corresponding right side switch. here's a shot of a pair from ebay for reference:

I'm not worried about the right side not having a starter switch as I like using the kick starter and have alternate plans for the switch.

Anyway, here's my problem....where in the world does the throttle cable attach?? I see the inner recess where the throttle handle rests but no place to attach the cable. here's a shot of the underside for reference:

Did the CB100 do something tricky? I can't for the life of me figure it out. I hope nobody is slapping their forehead to this post as they read it.

I think I just found the answer:

Doesn't look like a good solution anymore :(

Thanks Steve. There's a lot of odd things going on with my CB that the PO had done. The right side controls have the mount for the handbrake welded on. I'm not sure if this was because it broke off or if the owner did some strange retrofit.

What I was looking for by purchasing the CB100 controls was a matching set that had blinkers on the left and light controls on the right. I'm guessing I'd be better off going with a CB450/350 switch set (at least that's what I've figured by searching ebay)? Either way, it looks like I'm going to dump the set I have as I don't think hunting down proper low bars with the channel for the throttle cable and then worrying about cable lengths is worth it. Anybody want a nice set of CB100 controls for cheap? :-)

At least you didn't have to pay a fluffy-pussy-ransom for them!

Low 'bar bikes rarely, if ever, have the slot for the throttle 'hinge'. You're not going to get off lightly with this; all the cables need to be changed, as does the wiring for the modified switching.

You definitely want to go the flat 'bar route?

Honestly, I'm really torn. It's like frosted mini wheats. The adult in me wants a comfy ride with tall bars so I can sit up straight. The kid in me wants the low bars with the aggressive looks that makes the bike look fast standing still.

From what it looks like, the PO already wired the winkers to the left switch and the headlight stuff to the right switch. All i need to do is find a set that has a normal throttle and is "similar" in looks so it doesn't look out of place.

It depends how far you want to go, funancially, really; any changes to your current setup are going to cost a couple of hundred bucks, minimum, I'd say. Any change in 'bar height is going to result in new
  • handlebar
    clutch cable
    front brake cable
    throttle cable
    throttle pipe (grip)
    r/h throttle cave & starter button ass'y
    r/h brake lever / perch
Personally, I'd get it running and ride. If you really must overcome the asymmetry, then model-search on Western Hills Honda's on-line fiche and look for a l/h winker switch / horn button ass'y that matches the r/h one that you currently have. Although, I have to observe, that it seems the PO may have lopped off the mirror thread boss on your current throttle / light switch ass'y.

US-market models had 3(?*) 'bar heights: flat (low 'bar), intermediate and high (but not as high as the CA(?) 'bar that you currently have.

Low 'bar -- the only one for me, but that's a nostalgia thing -- is pretty low-comfort unless you have long arms.

High 'bar looks bloody awful, IMHO. Lower than the current 'bar you have.

Intermediate is a reasonable compromise between comfort and looks.

I'll follow up with pics when I can.

Start from about '64 on the WHH fiche and see what you can find for each model; it'll be time well spent in the end. Bob White, from whom you bought the NOS switches, is a good guy to deal with (a personal experience) and may take them back if you buy other, more suitable stuff from him. Retro Bikes are much-revered on this forum.

*I may be talking out of my hat here, but I've not seen evidence of any other factory types other than the Canadian-market 'high-high' cruiser 'bar in the previous pic.
