It's a Good Day

Post by britman » Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:04 am

The definition of a good day is to completely rewire a CL77 and everything works. The loom I had apparently came from a machine with winkers (no tag) and after I sorted out the extra blue, orange, and gray wires, re wrapped and heat shrunk entire sections, made a horn button spring, and cleaned out an entire prehistoric insect village in the horn itself, everything works when you turn the key. I have always had a love- hate relationship with wiring and just some advice for the any other non experts out there when you start the electrical process, " GOOD NOTES AND A DIGITAL CAMERA. " I am starting to get some flack from my wife however. I now have more pictures stored in my system of a CL77 in varying states of repair than of the Grand baby.

brit, you make an interesting point that I too have considered with my CL (a 66 small hub.) It also has the extra wires for the winkers and I have considered removing them from the loom since I will not be adding winkers to my scrambler while I own it. The question is do I hurt the value of the bike in the long run by removing them, will the extra wires come in handy if I had to use one for another purpose?

Guys, LM has afforded the info that the harness with the winker wiring and with no year tag is of a non-original (but not necessarily non-Honda) persuasion. I have inherited one, fitted to my CB.

I use one of those EXTRA wires to ground the speedo/headlight area. I install a wire terminal on the frame end and attach that to the frame with one of the 6mm bolts at the air cleaner bracket and another wire terminal at the speedo end. The 1967 bikes did come with the spares (US EXPORT) and all the after production real HONDA ones have the spares. NO BIG DEAL!. .............lm

LM, is it a good idea to run an extra ground to the spedo/headlight? Or is this a thing to do with the extra wires that won't hurt?

Thanks,
Gunner

One of the most frustrating wiring problems is when the parts at the handlebar/headlight area won't lite/work. This ground when done while the bike is apart and the wires can be reached and connected easily can/will stop future electrical problems.
AS A RULE I DON'T JUST DO THINGS. .....................lm

LM, thanks! I have my frame mostly tore down so adding an additional ground wire will be an easy thing to do when I put it back together. It makes sense if you every tried to trace down a ground problem :)
