"Click" and Nothing

Post by Madness » Wed Aug 29, 2007 7:34 am

Question all…

I have a 64 CA77 305,

Fresh charged battery, new after market Rectifier…

All I get is a “Click” from the Starter Solenoid, not even a hint of starter turn…
I shorted across the solenoid and nothing, I removed the starter cover and I can turn the gear in both directions (Counter clockwise is easier)…
The starter tried before but that was with a low battery…

What is next?

Run a positive directly to the starter?
Anyone know a source for starter brushes?

Thanks in advance…

If you have a jumper, or jumper cables, you can grond to the frame, and red to starter to test that way. Ohio cycles probably has brushes.

Thank you kind sir!

The battery checked at 12.5V, when jumped to the starter....... it turned right over :)
Now I'm thinking its the Solenoid, from what I have read I can disassemble it and clean the contacts.
I may give that a try. I have also read that this process can yield limited success results...

Any suggestions on a solenoid?

Thanks again!!

Scotty, Im fortunate to have never had to replace one. Make sure the two small wires going to are plugged in correctly One is a ground, and the other has 12 volts.

Well, if it clicks, the low amp side(relay) is working fine as well as your start button. This leaves only the high amp side. Start by making sure the lead from the battery to the Starter relay has juice. If that checks out, the big contacts in the switch are next. It's a simple mechanical connection, just make sure they are clean and flat. Once that checks out, the only piece left is the big wire from there to the starter motor. Both this wire and the one from the battery, especially the latter, are prone to becoming corroded around there ends, which creates resistance robbing the system of the amps it needs to turn the motor over. In effect, the battery no longer has enough juice to energize the relay, turn over the motor, make spark AND push juice through rotten wires and contacts.

If it clicks, it can be made to work. Sometimes it requires replacing wires, sometimes you have to rebuild the contacts.

Success!!!!

After all the cleaning contacts, testing, and looking for replacement parts….
It was just a wire that broke loose (Positive from battery to solenoid)…

All is well in the Land of Madness!!

Thank you all for the help!!
