1963 cb77 tach.

Post by bk305 » Sun Mar 11, 2007 7:16 am

The last few times i ran my bike, i noticed the tach. needle went from a normal reading then floated? up to redline and then back to where it was. my question is... IS there a quick fix i can do to correct this ? can i take this unit apart and clean/fix it ? most of the time it seems to work fine but it is now happening more often. any suggestions?? thanks- bk

I recommend ya remove the cable from the engine then remove the enter part.
Clean with a rag and lube with white grease.
If this doesn't fix it ya will need to check further. ........lm

If lubing the cable and drive gear doesn't fix it then the meter itself needs going in to.
I highly recommend not doing it yourself. Unless you're an experienced machinist and have an assortment of precision machine tools at hand. I've "fixed" several myself, but it never seems to last. These meters have parts that wear out, and it seems that time more than mileage is the culprit. I finally resolved to let an expert do it, and have been quite pleased with the result. I can confirm the smoothness and accuracy that the meters now display. There are a couple of different outfits that perform the service, but I recommend this guy:

Foreign Speedo
2246 1/2 University Ave.
San Diego, CA 92104
(619) 298-5278

He can also have your dial face and needle looking like new.

Thanks guys for the suggestions- i'll have to try the grease first (seems to me it was pretty dry when i assembled it awhile back-maybe it had a graphite lube? on it?) anyhow...if that doesn't work out, i might try that foreign speedo shop.-bk
