Good luck

Randy, that's a really good point! I did change the ground connector at the battery, but not the hot. I had better do that, and then see what happens!

Thank you!!!!

Vince, I meant to tell you, sorry - they said they "couldn't re-magnetize early Honda rotors". Darn it. I've been out doing silly things (like racing my bicycle with other old ladies and winning medals and stuff ;) ) or I'd have been over to the local automotive electrical place to ask them.
Honestly, I think you're going to be hard-pressed to find a place that can do it. I've been down this very road, and didn't have any luck. It turned out to be a lot less of a headache to just find an NOS early (without the 'L') example.

In my 'day job' I have been working with a magnet expert who is also an old bike enthusiast. He is making some super powerful magnets for us for a railroad signalling application.

He is the MD and resident expert of a company that makes all kinds of magnetic devices - I'll ask his opinion.

At the very minimum he has a gauss meter to properly test the strength of these rotors. It would be interesting to compare the difference between one that has been on a bike for 50 years and one that has been on a shelf for 50 years... :-)

In the old days we were recommended to put a steel 'keeper' across flywheel magnetos from British bikes to help retain the magnetism when they were off the bike.

Anyone tried Joe Hunt Magnetos?

There was a post on a Brit Bike forum that mentioned they were happy to remagnetise Lucas rotors. At the time of the posting the price was around $25, which sounds pretty reasonable.

May be worth a try. They are in California. They can always say no.... :-)

Graham, I'm beginning to believe the stator coils and rotor are okay. I am getting 55.6 VAC across the yellow/brown stator output, and 58.3 VAC across the pink/brown stator output. When I connect the Radio Shack bridge rectifier directly to the stator leads, with the battery in the circuit, I get battery voltage at the + terminal on the rectifier. When I disconnect the battery and connect a 12V lightbulb, it lights right up, and when I rev the engine, the generator will burn out the bulb (it does that because I have the pink and yellow legs combined). So, there is no issue with the output from the generator, as far as I can determine. I've checked my ground and hot connections on the battery, and they seem okay. All of the lights light up on the bike, and the engine will run off of the battery. But, the system won't deliver ABOVE battery voltage to the battery.

Bad battery? It's a lead acid battery, not a gel.
