Solenoid Replacement ?

Post by jshell » Fri Jan 25, 2008 3:10 pm

Hey guys
I'm ready to move past the planning stage of rewiring a 65 CA77...
I'm wondering if anyone could tell me a little about replacing my starter solenoid? I have not ties to keep it original, but I'm really unsure if there is much difference? Anyone have any suggestions for a generic or a source for an inexpensive after-market?
Thanks
-Justin

first question, do you not have a stock solinoide? If their is no solinoide on your bike, any OLD Ford automite would be the first thing that comes to mind. very cheep. Solinode's rairly fail, they are very SIMPLE. Just a electro- magnet that draws together a set of contacts, for current to flow on.

Thanks Superchicken-
yeah, there isn't even one there. Really, the only parts of the electrical/charging system I have is the starter, a worn out condensor, and a set of points in need of replacement. Everything else has been taken off - the harness, the solenoid, the switches, the key (by the way; this is referred to as the "combonation switch" in the wiring diagram, right??) all of it.
So, thanks. I'll see what I can find. I'm assuming that barring the mounting issues, a solenoid of similar size should be just about the same? I'll start by looking for a Ford.
Thanks-justin

Jshell, on the solenoid issue, you will need to find one that will work with your system. In other words applying a ground will make the contacts close. Most automotive solenoids (like Ford) require a 12volt source to close the contacts, it won't work with your Honda start button which supplys a ground to the solenoid. Try looking for one on E-Bay or a bike salvage yard. Kustommusic

I have an OEM solenoid from a 65 CA77 that I parted out. Took it apart and checked contact bar and it is all clean with no corrosion or burn marks. Tested with a battery and it pulls in. Contact me by PM and we can work a deal if you wish.

Starter problem or solenoid

Post by heyitstim » Mon Jul 28, 2008 11:38 pm

My solenoid on my 305 clicks when i press the starter button. I'm not sure what the proble is, I can run a wire from the battery to the starter post and it will turn the motor over and even start it. The proble is when I press the starter button and just hear a click. Can you help with this, any advice would be great. Thanks Tim
