My son and I are working on a 1965 ca77 305 and the stator and rotor (hope those are the right terms) were off the bike when we purchased. There are only 5 coils on one piece yet shop drawings I have show 6. It almost looks like someone rewired the coils to bypass the missing one? If this is so, can this part be taken to an automotive alternator repair shop and be rebuilt or am I better off just finding another one? If it was jerryrigged by the previous owner, I am assuming it probably was generating an incorrect voltage and would not be a good thing to try to fix and use it as is.
The other piece (rotor?) looks like it had some type of thin metallic gasket or bushing on the back, held by 3 screws, that is partially scraped away. If I can replace this piece, is there anything else about the main part it is attached to that might not make it reuseable? It is one strong magnet.
I think we can make this bike run, but these parts are a mystery and have to be working before we can do much else. Thanks.
magneto questionsI have been reading this site for a while and felt it was time to contribute some. Looks like your magneto is toast. Besides one missing coil there are two with missing insulation wrappings. On E-bay now there is a new coil for sale (not mine). Maybe pricey compared to a used one but it is NIB! Several used are also offered on E-bay and numerous members of this forum may have one for sale. Having it rewound would probably cost as much as a new one after hand winding, epoxing, and baking. Remember, as has been covered many times here, that the charging system of these bikes is marginal at best. With a missing coil jumpered you are missing out on some electrons that the system needs. So far as the thin plate goes, that is part of the elec. starter clutch. Probably can clean it up but replace the 3 springs, pins, and rollers inside the housing of the clutch while it is apart. If you don't have a parts book or CD on your bike you should get one available on this site. Somebody else jump in if what I have stated is incorrect, I have thick skin.
The electric starter clutch plate you refer to is missing from position 2 o'clock to 5 o'clock so I presume that part cannot function unless it is whole.
I can't imagine that jumpering the coils by the previous owner could have any good result. I have just finished a 1966 Dream for myself and totally understand the weak charging capacity of these bikes when operating perfectly. I appreciate the assessment and figured this was going to be a problem. Thanks.
