motor stops when headlight turns on

Post by cdeines » Sat Jun 07, 2014 2:52 pm

when I try to restart, headlight won't come on, if I wait a few minutes it will work again and I can start it (cb77) sometimes it will run for a few miles with headlight on then die?

Check the battery voltage with the headlamp off and on. It sounds like you have a charging or battery fault.

I got a new battery, I'll ride around close to home to see if it happens again, I think most of the electric "stuff" needs updating, stator looks like it's got an oily residue, if there's a seal behind it, it probably needs replacing?
Thanks for the help... much appreciated.

Be sure to check the battery fluid every few weeks and top to the "upper level" marker as needed. Indeed your problem does sound like a weak battery. As for the oily residue, I wouldn't worry until it becomes a full blown nuisance leak then address it. Hope your new battery remedies your trouble.

Had this same problem..

I had this on my 67 S90 several years ago. I went to a friends house and my bike died on the way. After a few minutes it would start but die if I turned the headlight on. I limped home (it was dark now!) by riding back streets without the headlight, just using the streetlights. It would charge up well enough to get me through a signalized intersection with the headlight on and then it would die if I didn't turn the headlight off. It had an old batter so I got another fully charged and the same thing happened. I had a friend check my charging system and it was the stator. I got on off fleabay and now I can ride all day long with the headlight on no problem....check the stator. Happy riding.
