How much juice is needed to run the ign w/ Kickstart only?

I'm thinking of going kick start only on my CB77, and I'd like to use a small SLA battery, something just big enough to comfortably run the ignition so I can get a spark. How many amp hours does the ignition need? Could I use something small as 1.2Ah SLA?


I'll be using only a 35w headlight and a 5w/10w tail/brake light and they will be off when starting the bike

40 watts of lighting at 12VDC = 3.3 amps.

You may be able to start the bike but it won't run very long without something charging the battery..

How many amps does the ignition system draw? How much juice can the factory charging system create at highway speed?

From my experience apparently no one knows. The charging system was and still is a mystery to me. I have a 305 dream - I have tried two stators and several rectifiers and regulators. It appears to me that mine would be hard pressed to just keep the battery charged much less run many accessories. You could use a digital meter to see what the current consumption is for the ignition system. I do know that it takes a "hot" battery to make the ignition work properly.

I am sure a small battery would discharge very quickly with the lights on unless the motor was consistently run at high rpm. Check the output voltage of your charging system at the battery at high rpm. This may give you a clue.

And I wonder why you want to run a small battery.

I'm working on customizing my cb77 a little. I pulled the factory battery box, gonna hide the battery. Smaller batteries are easier to hide. From what you've told me, I think I'll run a 9ah SLA. I can get the 9ah SLAs for $20, and if i turn it on it's side, it should be fairly hidden. The $20 ones have blade connectors, so I won't even try the starter with one, but I have one in my 305 Dream (bought it because it has similar dimension to the factory dream battery and I figured what the heck). It will kick start with the lights on. I haven't tested it past that though, my Dream isn't road ready either, a pinhole in the tank has the whole bike parked.
