how many volts does the stator put out to charge the battery?.with it running at idle with a volt meter it reads 12.48 volts

12.48 volts isn't that much. What does the voltage at the battery terminal measure, with the switch on, before you start it? What does it measure at 3,000 rpm?

The alternator outputs AC voltage. That AC voltage is converted by the rectifier to DC voltage for the battery. A fully charged battery will be approximately 12.7VDC. With the the motor running at several thousand rpm's you should see better than the 12.7 VDC. If you turn the high beam on there should still be high enough voltage to charge the battery.

Alternators can be checked by disconnecting the alternator wires from the rectifier and checking the AC voltage output. I have not been able to find the spec for the proper AC voltage from the Dream alternator. Typical readings from other bikes would be anywhere from 30VAC to 70VAC depending on the rpm.

This is checked by checking the voltage between any two wires from the alternator. The Dream is a bit odd. Since there is no voltage regulator two wires from the alternator go to the rectifier and the third wire is ties in when the headlight is switched. They used this method to stop overcharging the battery. As best as I can tell from the wiring diagram the Yellow and Brown go directly to the rectifier and the Pink to the ignition switch and is tied in when the switch is in the headlight position. So If you disconnect all three of these wires you should be able to measure the AC voltage between any two. My guess is it must be at least 30VAC at several thousand rpm.

I have done these type tests many times but have not yet done it on Dream so I can't be as informative as I would like to be.
