I am almost finished with a dream project and all electrical worked when taken apart and now break light only works when key is in off position and no neutral light at all?
I have looked at wiring diagram and have many extra parts I have tried a different wiring harness and then different ignition switch, I have cleaned all fresh painted parts for a good ground. The electrical is my skill I have little understanding of. Light works, bright lights, back light for speedo, starter and horn.
I have been on the forum years ago and could not log back on I was yellow 60. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Adam
neutral light and back brake light problem
Re: neutral light and back brake light problemTime to refer to the wiring diagram in the sticky section and put the multimeter to use. The electrical system on these bikes is about as simple as it gets. Two wires in almost every instance, power and ground. My recollection is that nothing should be powered when the key is in the OFF position, brake light included. Trace the wire to its source and figure out where the power is coming from. If the wiring is correctly routed, you likely have a shorted ignition switch because that is the component that creates the connection between the positive battery post and the bike's lighting circuits. As for the neutral light, test the bulb in the holder first. Make sure you are working with a good bulb. If good, proceed on with the troubleshooting. Test for power to the bulb with the ignition on. If power is there, figure out why it's not grounding to complete the circuit. The neutral switch inside the left side cover completes the ground for the light. When the bike is in neutral, the switch allows current to flow through it to ground. To test it, disconnect the yellow and green wire's bullet connector behind the carb(s) and jump the non-switch side to ground. If the neutral light illuminates, you probably have a bad neutral switch. Test the switch side of the bullet connector by checking to see if there is continuity to ground when the bike is in neutral. If not, you have a bad switch or the triggering mechanism behind the switch is not telling the switch the bike is in neutral. If the light does not illuminate when you ground the non-switch side of the bullet connector, you have a problem between the bullet connector and the bulb housing. Find out where the wire is broken by tracing to the bulb socket and repair it.
